There are so many garden projects that I want to start.
I often look at my garden and daydream. I think about a kids space in the garden, fern area where it’s shady, a little potted succulent/cacti area, mosaic projects…the list goes on. It’s here where I get overwhelmed – and although I know I need to start somewhere (anywhere!) I stay stuck. Because I stay stuck, nothing actually gets achieved.
The recent Easter holidays were a great time to start a project. The little potted cacti area would have to wait as I hadn’t organised any plants. However, I did have the pots and bowls I wanted to pot the cacti in.
What I could do was at least get these pots and bowls and put them in the area where I wanted to put the cacti. This would be the first action step that I would need to take – and one that was easily achievable. Also putting these pots and bowls in their area would be a great visual reminder to eventually fill them with plants!
My tool area needed a tidy as well. I read a great article in Organic Gardener by Simon Webster recently where he talks about the importance of keeping gardening tools organised. I can relate and admire those with a sense of organisation. Maybe I can’t have my tool and garage areas completely looking like a picture from Home Beautiful, but I could definitely take the action step of a tidy up.
Another area I could take a look at was the back corner of my garden where I had accumulated all sorts of bits and bobs that I thought could be useful in the garden one day! The problem was that I needed to remind myself what was actually in that back corner. So another action step of looking at that back corner and then moving forward from there.
I identified these three small action steps I could take to get the ball rolling in my gardening projects. When I break down gardening projects this way, I don’t find them as overwhelming. In a quote by Rudyard Kipling he says ‘A garden is not made, by sitting in the shade’ . So true!
Now over to you, what are some garden projects that you’d like to achieve?
Oh, where do I start? Dedicated compost area to be built, fence around the veggie patch, work out what on earth we can plant under our MASSIVE pin oak tree in front yard. This tree has a heritage overlay on it and we are stumped for ideas. Having run a garden design business that’s not a good place to be!
Establish a ‘secret’ spot where you can hide away, sit and escape the noise of traffic, enjoy a G&T or a cup of tea and lose yourself. Work out where I can install an outdoor bath for soothing the bod after those long days of renovating and gardening take there toll. Get the bird bank planting established, it takes so long for things to grow and sometimes I feel we are running out of time! Build a beehive, build a pond, keep growing our food and keep planting. If not for us for those who will be able to appreciate it in the future. Apparently our pin oak was planted because the former owner had a passion about the American Civil War and pin oaks feature in that history. We now get to enjoy its beauty!
Wowsers! Loads of projects there Maree – I also love the idea of a secret space and an outdoor bath…can’t wait to check out progress on your projects through your blog https://aroundthemulberrytree.wordpress.com/ 🙂 Have a good one!
