It is usually about this time of the year that I think I want to make my Christmas gifts. My lack of forward thinking and time (especially at the stage of the year) rules out any thing too complicated.
Pot of Succulents
This is a simple gift to put together and looks great. My friend (who is receiving this gift) has just built an outdoor entertaining area. This gift would be a perfect addition to this space.
If I was more organised, I would have propagated cuttings. Succulents are super easy to propagate but you do need time. Local nurseries and any of the big name stores eg Mitre 10 will sell a range of succulents. Gumtree is another option to find local succulents.
What you need:
A variety of succulents. Include different shapes and sizes.
A pot
Potting Mix
Stones or Shells
- Firstly, arrange how the succulents will look in the pot. It makes it easier to re-arrange the succulents when there is no potting mix in the pot!
- When you are happy with how things look, fill the pot with potting mix.
- Plant the succulents in the pots.
- Give them some water.
- Place some stones or shells around the succulents.
Another cool gift you can give is a Jade Plant. The Jade plant symbolises friendship. It is also known as the Good Luck plant.
I put some shells that the kids collected in this pot. I thought this would be a nice touch as the gift receiver is one of the kids favourite people. This was their contribution to the gift.
The other idea that I had as a gift for this friend was a Herb Pot. Planting up a bunch of herbs in a pot so my friend could keep this close to his kitchen and use the herbs for cooking. This would also be a simple gift idea.

Great minds think alike !! I too have put together some succulent plant into shallow clay pots which sit on top of my circular outdoor coffee tables. My favourite plant in these arrangements would be the Sedums plus pieces of succulents I have struck, including the jade.
rather than watering as such I mixed 1 tspn fish emulsion into a 750ml spray bottle with water and they are responding well. Good idea for
a Christmas gift. Will have to look for some more suitable plants. Happy Christmas and good gardening.
Hi Robyn
I will be making a pot for myself as well because yes, they look fab.
Thanks for the tip on the fish emulsion – I have a Jade Plant I need to re-pot so will give this one a go 🙂
Merry Christmas.
